"Treatment of our dad by practice and hospital"

About: General practices in Lanarkshire University Hospital Wishaw / Ambulatory Care University Hospital Wishaw / General Surgery (Wards 16-18)

(as a relative),

My dad is 85 with terminal cancer, he also has a stoma bag fitted, he was bleeding through the stoma and we got the district nurse out who then got in touch with our gp practice to get someone out, but they refused and guessed what was wrong. We eventually got her to get us to hospital, they told us to go to ambulatory care where the waiting time was 10 to 12 hours, his stoma bag filled and we had to plead for help to get him somewhere to get it changed.

We were eventually taken in after 8 hours in a waiting room, they decided to take my dad in he went to a side room in ward 18 at Wishaw, the doctors couldn't see anything but we then had the stoma nurse who found another tumour in the stoma, he was the transferred to ward 17 where he was put in what appeared to be an old storage room. It had no shower, no toilet, no tv now he is 85 with terminal cancer and a stoma bag. He was told by a member of staff not to go out of the room for a toilet as the lights would be out, my dad then asked how he had to get his bag changed or go to the toilet he was handed cardboard potty things, he asked how he could get washed and he was pointed to a small sink with no privacy. He had to stand with his trousers at his ankles getting washed.

The next day no one examined him or told us anything, but because they couldn't do anything we felt that no one apart from his day shift nurse cared. He was then told to go home with no real answers. The NHS has become a disgrace in my opinion. The room was dirty and no one cleaned anytime we were there.

People running the NHS should be ashamed, also with our own doctors practice, who we felt were not interested in seeing our Dad, guessing what was wrong and just sending him to the hospital. No wonder the waiting times are so bad. We have wonderful district and palliative nurses and amazing carers who help my dad and I can't thank them enough. My dad was at St Andrews Hospice and the care that he receives from them is unreal.

We as a family are upset and disgusted by the way our dad was treated.
