"More information earlier would be helpful"

About: Sexual Health Services - North Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent (Open Clinic)

(as the patient),

Overall I had a good experience, staff were friendly and professional, and the procedure was much better than I expected.

However I have a slight concern regarding informed consent. During my appointment to get the IUS (intra-uterine system) inserted, I was strongly recommended the implant instead, this made me feel pressured, but also worried about my initial decision to get the IUS. I chose to get the IUS still as I did not have adequate time to research the implant, but this has left me anxious about my decision.

If there is a large enough evidence base to suggest the implant is more effective, then this information should be provided to patients in the initial phone call consultation, not once we're in the room, to enable proper informed consent.

In contrast to my friends experience, she had her IUD fitted by one of the nurses, who made her feel like she made the right decision, even holding her hand during the procedure, and offered her a nervous wee before beginning, which just helps to calm you down and provides you with the ability to sort yourself out downstairs.

Compared to this I felt anxious about my decision, and quite unsupported in what is a very uncomfortable and painful procedure.

As I said though, my overall experience was good, and I just thought I'd mention these little things as they may help to change protocol, and improve the experience for everyone.
