I wish to report what I consider a dangerous decision made by a psychiatrist attached to Derby: i.e. to abruptly stop anti-psychotic drugs a child was taking with a high BMI.
The psychiatrist said it is perfectly safe for the child to stop taking the anti- psychotic drugs and all her other drugs. But this is contrary to other advice given by any other psychiatrist.
NICE guidelines state that anti-psychotic medication should never be stopped abruptly. Two days after this happened the child harmed other children due to high level of dysregulation. She had been seen by a CAMHS nurse in Derby and the Dr never actually saw her, yet agreed with the nurse, who spent 3/4 of an hour with the girl and said there's nothing wrong with her, she doesn't need medication.
She had previously been prescribed medication by a consultant psychiatrist in a hospital abroad where she had been an inpatient for ten weeks. The nurse told me that was because it was abroad! I consider this to be a highly racist remark.
The fact that the nurse had no qualifications to prescribe, or otherwise, the medication shocked me, but then for the psychiatrist to agree, without even seeing the patient is beyond belief.
This medication, if it were indeed decided was no longer needed, should have been properly titrated, under proper psychiatric care and not just leaving her without anything and no follow-up other than asking the patient "do you feel OK?".
"My daughter's medication was stopped abruptly"
