"I feel disappointed that we have been let down"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Audiology Queen Margaret Hospital / Ear, Nose & Throat

(as a parent/guardian),

I feel disappointed that we have been let down by ENT in a crucial stage of development for my son to him having hearing loss due to glued ears.

I made the choice at our first Ent appointment not to go for surgery as a first option as it was a scary thought to have surgery on him. We were seen by Audiology and was advised that he would need to wear 2 hearing aids and glued ear might never clear itself.

I decided at the Audiology appointment two years ago that the Ent consultant was asked to come over to speak to myself. I was told we were to be on ENT list to get gromits. I was told this list was long so I was fine to wait.

We have since found out that he was never added to the list and 2 years later has been referred again by audiology. Audiology have been fantastic with us and their level of care is great but there is no longer anything they can do for us.

My son has recently been tested at school for his hearing loss. It has been detrimental to his learning as he is behind in reading/letter phonics and struggles in certain social aspects.

I feel like my son has been failed and I just don't know what to do now. This stage of learning is were we develop our language and if he doesn't hear things correctly now it will affect him forever.

Hello bluegh75,

Thank you for sharing your concern relating to your family's experience. Whilst comforted to read that you feel Audiology have provided the care you'd expect for your son I'd very much like the opportunity to discuss further and assist where possible. Our contact email is fife.audiology.fife@nhs.scot and my name is David, were you to message direct I'd be happy to offer advice.

Regards, David
