"My mum"

About: University Hospital Monklands / General Surgery (Wards 4 & 7)

(as a relative),

My mum was admitted in mid-December with severe pain so she was given morphine, had a scan, she had a hernia which ruptured her bowel. Was prepped for surgery then was told she had had a heart attack probably due to the morphine as she had no heart problem before given morphine. So no operation.

Was put on a DNR even though no family member was there to sign, I live abroad was not able to get there till a day later. Was told nothing they could do, I asked them to give her an epidural and do the operation. I was asked if I wanted my mum to suffer, as they seem to be able to tell the future. Basically she was left to die, and she passed away 3 days later.

This should never have happened. I will never set foot in this hospital and I would definitely not go there if over a certain age as it seems then you just don't matter.

Update posted by Cumbernauld (a relative)

Hi thank you for your response,

I would also mention when the DNR was put in place and I said I didn't want my mum put on one the reply I got was if she had another heart attack would I want her brain dead. I'm not kidding, talk about putting family through guilt. Everything possible should be done. First it was no operation due to not surviving Anethesic, then it was the after care.

Did we really want to put her through that, well yes cause who can see into the future.

Dear Cumbernauld,

I am so sorry for your loss.

I am sorry to hear about the experience your mum and your family have had at University Hospital Monklands. As Care Opinion is not a complaints site, and is anonymous, I would not like to discuss further publicly in case any personal information is shared, however, as you have explained your experience very clearly I believe you may have already contacted our patient affairs team and they are the best people to respond personally to your complaint and conduct a full investigation.

They will be in touch with you in due course.

Kind Regards,

Jenni
