My daughter developed a chest infection which did not respond to initial antibiotics. Due to worsening symptoms, we contacted NHS 24 on New Years day and within 2 minutes of speaking to a call handler (Nicole) we were then speaking to a Nurse Practitioner (Michelle). Out of hours arranged and reviewed by ANP within 4 hours of initial contact with NHS.
Clear plan put in place and transferred to University Hospital Wishaw due to RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) and Increased respiratory effort. Staff at Ward 19 demonstrated exceptional care. My daughter was involved in her care and staff ensured that we were informed at all times. I can't remember all the names, but I do remember speaking to a Healthcare Support Worker, Donna, who was on shift. It made an exceptionally stressful and worrying time much easier!
My daughter had an x-ray exceptionally quickly and we were able to go home with a worsening statement and open access. Due to some issues with the antibiotic (outwith the control of the NHS) there was a slight delay in getting the bottle, however Ward 19 (Fiona) and Community Pharmacies could not have been more helpful in making sure I was aware of what steps to take to access the medication.
The care received over the New Year break, demonstrated that the system, whilst under exceptional pressure, can work and I feel the positive experiences must be highlighted.
