"The most exceptional support"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital / Accident & Emergency Royal Alexandra Hospital / Gynaecology (Ward 32)

(as the patient),

After struggling to fall pregnant, and a number of early chemical pregnancies later, I fell pregnant naturally. As a precaution, my husband and I attended a private 8 &  11 week scan. At the 11 week scan the baby had no heartbeat. I was then sent to the Early Pregnancy Unit (not RAH)  where I received an ultra scan and an internal scan to confirm the miscarriage. I had no signs of a miscarriage up until this point.

One week later I had severe contraction like cramps overnight and in the morning was bleeding heavily. Blood was quite literally pouring out of me (despite my best attempts, I could not stop the bleeding) and I passed a number of large blood clots. My husband decided to take me to A&E at RAH. The A&E staff were fantastic. I was seen within 5 minutes and 1 hour later on a bed, with pain relief and fluids provided to make me comfortable. A wonderful junior doctor from the Gynaecology ward assessed me further and decided I would require specialist support.

Once up in the ward, the doctors and nurses provided the most exceptional support. The way they spoke with both my husband and I about what I was going through and the options available was handled sensitively and in the most caring manner.

During my stay I received an internal procedure, fluids & pain relief. The nurses on shift were the best I have ever come across. One nurse in particular, Karen, took the time to comfort me and provided additional support regarding the loss of a baby. Nobody up until this point had offered any future support. Not only was she amazing with me but my husband also. She understood that this difficult time was impacting both of us in different ways. Once leaving she made the following comment - I look forward to seeing you back here, next door in the maternity unit, as this will happen for you. That comment is getting me through this difficult time.

Thank you

Dear magzq73,

I am truly sorry for you loss and offer condolences to both you and your husband.

Thank you so much for finding time to provide feedback at such a difficult time.

I wish share this with my colleagues in A&E.

I am glad you felt the nurses and doctors offered exceptional support during this time.

Karen will be pleased you felt she offered additional support to you too following the loss of your baby and that discussing the future with you was appreciated.

I will share this with Karen and the gyn team in Ward 32.

If you require more support this is a good website:

I wish you both a gentle recovery.

Kind regards,

Nikki Harvey
