Operation on tongue and neck required due to cancer by maxi facial dept. Quite a long and difficult operation (c10 hours I believe).
During the nearly 2 years since the op, I've had to deal with a large amount of side-effects, many of which were never mentioned prior to the operation - to my mind the consultant has been economical with the truth. eg. when I ask why I have lost 50% use of one arm and shoulder and 20% in the other for an op on my tongue, it's just dismissed as nerve damage with no real interest in the fact that I believe they caused it.
In a recent meeting the consultant blithely recommended I become totally nil by mouth due to swallowing problems, without giving any consideration to the effect this may have on me.
Prior to the op, when post-op effects were being discussed, such a possibility was never mentioned - I was told my diet would have to change, which I understood, but not a total and complete end to any food or drink.
Frankly, I have been left very depressed after that dismissal and wondering what the point of continuing is.
