"Baby milk intolerance"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Dietetics

(as a service user),

My baby was diagnosed with a suspected cows milk protein allergy and I have had little to no support from the Nutrition and Dietetic team at Forth Valley.

We got a letter to say it will be  16-18 weeks to see someone, my baby will be weaned by then. All the help they have is a leaflet in the post.

Additionally my baby is having issues with his current milk, my health visitor did an urgent referral to the dietetics team which should have been responded to in 72 hours, yet a week later we are still no further forward and my baby is still not eating - the team should be ashamed leaving a 4 month old child!

In response to your post to our team, we would like to apologise for your experience so far.

Our team receives a significant number of referrals on a daily basis and unfortunately this exceeds our capacity. We regularly liaise with GP's and Health Visitors to help support infants until they can be fully assessed by our team. We are working to update our pathway for Cow's Milk Protein Allergy in accordance with NICE Guidelines 2023 and Milk Allergy in Primary Care 2019 Guideline to ensure families can be fully supported by their Health Visitor until they are seen by the Dietetic team.

We would advise if you have ongoing concern that you make an appointment back with your GP or Health Visitor who can request support and advice from us in the meantime.

Thanks for replying, however I am getting on going support from my Health Visitor who has regularly emailed the team to ask for support and ask what next - she has not had a response?

We are now on to his fifth milk, and are having to wean him early to try and maintain weight as he’s dropped percentiles. My HV has regularly emailed and does not get a response - so to say that they can reach out to your team for help and support I feel is untrue.

I completely appreciate that the team are dealing with a lot, however in this instance I feel completely let down and unsupported in this journey.

Thank you for your reply and I am sorry that you have not found this helpful. We would love to be able to offer you some support. If you are able to email the team on fv.childrensdiet@nhs.scot with your contact details and referencing your Care Opinion story, one of the Paediatric Dietitians will contact you as soon as possible. I hope this helps.
