My 89 year old mother recently attended the Medical Day unit as a day case. She was very apprehensive, actually frightened, of undergoing her procedure. We attended the day before for bloods and were met with kindness and caring by everyone we encountered, from the clerical staff to the staff nurse Sarah.
It was no different the next day. My mum was admitted efficiently with every effort made to explain what was happening and provide reassurance. Claire was her nurse and was lovely, even allowing me to remain with my mum until it was time for her to leave the department.
Mr Glen, her surgeon, again explained very clearly what was to happen, and returned to tell her the outcome of the procedure in a way that she understood clearly. He was very kind and comforting to her.
I was able to collect my mum later that day and again, every member of staff that we had contact with were wonderful.
As a retired nurse, I can only say that the staff of the unit are a credit to our Scottish NHS.
