"Staff are extremely busy"

About: Daisy Hill Hospital / Female Medical

(as the patient),

I attended my GP and was sent by ambulance to A&E with pneumonia, from here I was quickly prioritised and got a bed on Female Medical. As my oxygen levels where extremely low I have spent 10 days on oxygen.

As it is routine I was tested for covid on arrival, which was negative. I spent the next 6/7 days on an open ward and was then retested and came up positive. I am always very careful and have never had covid before, so obviously someone had brought covid onto the ward.

I have been moved into a room of my own to minimise the spread of infection, the only problem with this is the side wards seem to be forgotten about. I understand that all staff are under pressure, but it can take quite some time for someone to answer when I press my buzzer, I am lucky I am young enough that I can get to the bathroom by myself otherwise I could have a very long wait. I get all my meals, but for some reason my tray might not get lifted till the next day, and I don’t always get tea/coffee when it is being offered.

I have found the majority of nurses are really nice, but the doctors can be very abrupt and lack empathy and the HCA’s are all lovely, they are the backbone of the hospital.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of Female Medical Ward. We are sorry that while you had been on the ward you tested positive for Covid. I would like to apologize that your time here has not been a positive experience and I will address the issues you have highlighted with the staff. Feedback like this is appreciated so we can improve on the care we provide. I hope you are feeling better.

Best wishes

Judith
