"Poor respect for dignity and not enough staff"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Respiratory medicine

(as a relative),

My mother was transferred to B31 Respiratory. Individually the care staff seem nice enough . However there is a delay in getting any response for assistance including urgently. This seems mainly attributable to there not being enough of them.

I have provided her personal care myself.  Staff didn't check in or even remove the dirty linen etc at the end. I also had to provide some assistance to others as staff not to be seen. On the one occasion I did get assistance I felt that they demonstrated unsafe moving and handling and even managed to cut off her oxygen supply ! This was due to not considering the length of the tubing in relation to commode. Worse still they didn't notice when it disconnected.

Screens weren't pulled to preserve dignity . I lost confidence in their assistance and it made my mum very anxious . I therefore ended up struggling on by myself. Another relative could have assisted but they could not get in the door. When i asked staff how could i let them in she said I would need a pass but she could not open the door. Staff therefore just ignored the door.

The shower chair is also the commode leading to delays in access. Staff then move it without covering after use. Another disregard for dignity and added to the unmoved laundry another infection control risk. When staff can speak to you some of them are nice and the staff nurse was too. Just not enough staff and lack of skill as well a lack of respect for dignity in some carers. Very private conversations were also being held very loudly with only a curtain pulled.
