"Mum's treatment after op"

About: Royal Victoria Hospital / Trauma & Orthopaedics

(as a relative),

My mum had a full hip replacement recently. Myself and my family rang the number given to us all the Wednesday night through the Thursday morning without phone getting answered. My Mum is in her 80s and had been agitated.

I asked to get out of work  to go up for visiting as we were so worried  as the hospital had not contacted us either. We went to ward 4c as we were told that was where she was going and asked at the desk. We were told no, not on this ward, try ward 4a. I think it was no they said she wasn't there go to 4c, we explained that's where we went and they said she wasn't there, the nurse then looked at their computer and said she was on 4c.

Up we went again, explained again, were oh she is here, single door passed the double doors, when we got to her room we were horrified to see her lying in the dark, still in a gown, no teeth in and none of her own belongings around her. Her table was at the bottom of the bed, a tub of ice cream sitting with no spoon. As you can imagine we were horrified.

I pressed the button, no one came. I went to nurses station and asked why my mum was lying in the dark, a nurse came into room and said that sometimes happens in single rooms  - not an acceptable answer. Apparently, her own clothes hadn't come down from the other ward, nurse said they were busy - again, not acceptable. My sister had to go and locate my mum's stuff. We cleaned her teeth and put them in her mouth, I asked had my mum ate, was told yes she ate. I ask what, they didn't know, said mum's nurse was up doing a course.

Mum's named nurse came down and said mum was sleeping. I asked why they never left the bedside light on. A young doctor came in. I asked had mum been out of bed, they said no she wouldn't be out of bed till next day, yet the nurse said she had mum sitting in bed. No elderly person should be left in a dark room, it looked like she had been threw in and left.

I'm sure you will agree busy or not, I work in care and and it is kept person-centred at all times, I have also worked in care homes were the residents are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve. The ethos of all our trust are supposed to be: Working Together, Excellence, Openness and Honesty, and Compassion.
