"Experience with midwife"

About: Maternity care (Ward 31) / Labour suite maternity Royal Alexandra Hospital / Maternity care (Ward 31)

(as the patient),

I gave birth to my 2nd child in 2021, this was supposed to be classed as a special pregnancy. The doctor was amazing.

I ended up with covid pneumonia and I had my baby 3 weeks early. My waters broke at home after a sweep, I came to the RAH and my partner was sent home until 45 minutes before I had my baby.

I had a quick labour and wasn't took down to the labour ward until minutes before giving birth due to being told I wasn't ready to go yet, when I knew I was but didn't argue.

I had my baby 40 minutes later, I seen so many midwifes due to it being morning and my midwife who did birth my child went to get their breakfast and never read my notes or anything before hand.

I had the worst experience of my life after my baby was born. I tore really bad and had in my notes I wanted to be cut before I had to tear because it was so awful in my first birth, but due to my midwife needing their breakfast they couldn't read my notes so didn't know this.

I had so much trauma from my first child I felt every single thing no matter what they did when stitching me, still to this day it tortures me. Fortunately, after a never ending time a doctor came and stitched me, as my midwife was hurting me that much I was screaming so bad it was excruciating, to the fact they actually asked me if I had been previously sexually abused!

Absolutely awful experience with this midwife, they squeezed on my stomach that hard and that many times after birth I have so much trauma even 2 years later. The midwife made sure they took me up to the ward and said sorry as they knew they had done wrong.

I will never forget this and it's like night and day, my experience between my 1st and 2nd birth both in the RAH. Having children was so special to me but going on to have more is unfortunately not optional due to my experience. And my now mental health.

I wish I had reported this at the time but I just wasn't in the right mind. I wish this to happen to no one else. Birthing is never easy but this was horrific that no one should never have to experience.

Hi Gemhc49

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback through care opinion.

I am concerned reading your story and sorry that your birthing experience has left you feeling this way due to the care you received. I would like to offer you the opportunity to contact me directly and we can explore the concerns you have raised.

As a team this is not the experience or standard of care we wish for women in our care. Within maternity care we wish all women to feel that they have been listened to during their pregnancy journey and that their care has been to the highest standard. I apologise that this was not the case during your stay.

My contact details are below

Kindest Regards,

Laura Flynn
