My bowel screening test result revealed that further investigation was required into the amount of blood in my poo sample.
Within two weeks I was contacted by the endoscopy unit at the Vic, Kirkcaldy, offering an appointment the following Saturday. The quick appointment meant that what was an anxious time was kept to a minimum.
A pre-clinic phone call from a nurse outlined the procedure, my medical history and bowel habits were recorded and it was also a chance to ask any questions. The pharmacy sent a Moviprep bowel cleansing oral preparation to be taken 15 hours before the endoscopy.
The following morning at the hospital all the staff were great—friendly and so reassuring. Sedation or entonox gas/air was offered and I went for entonox but in the event no great amount was needed as the 30-minute colonoscopy procedure was straightforward with only a very limited period of discomfort.
It was interesting to view on a screen the camera scope travelling through my intestines. However, I appreciate that not every patient would want to watch.
The doctor carrying out the colonoscopy also had a very calming and reassuring manner which certainly puts you at ease. The doctor said he could not see anything concerning which was a great relief.
All in all, the staff were fantastic and the whole process very efficient. Many thanks.
I hope if any other person about to have a colonoscopy reads this is they are reassured that the care received from this hospital team is outstanding.
