I have never had a definitive diagnosis of whether I have late onset Asthma or COPD. Either way I have a lung condition which started to significantly impair my life. I was probably sceptical about Pulmonary Rehab and what it could do for me, but never-the-less I went for it. After my initial assessment and several offers of a start date (which I could not do because of grandchild care) I went to my first session in September.
The team could not have been more accommodating and understanding of my personal circumstances, even adding sessions at the end of the course to make up for sessions missed because of half term duties, and that made me feel comfortable.
Expert care of my health was given and a personalised exercise regime developed. I have to admit that I was worried about the limitations that my condition imposed and somewhat embarrassed about displaying them "in public". The team were so supportive and my fellow attendees gradually became part of a supportive group. We ended up bonding over coffee and cake in the adjacent café after our sessions!
I was probably pushed (very gently) out of my comfort zone by the team and increased my stamina and strength significantly over the course of the sessions. At my final "assessment" I had increased my all round fitness and even lost weight!!
The programme takes a willingness to try, determination to improve and some lack of inhibition. I feel better, fitter and I believe that my mental health has also improved by knowing that it doesn't have to be a slow decline into ill health if you take the first steps to deal with it.
I thoroughly recommend that anyone who is pointed in this direction by their GP or health professional welcomes the opportunity.
