"They are an amazing team"

About: Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (Edinburgh) / Play Services

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter has a needle phobia and needed blood tests - she’s been very unwell and the doctor said it’s the next step, she started to feel unwell and we have been going to the doctors since earlier this year. After a few times of the nurse and the doctor trying to take blood the doctor said that there was no more they could do so I asked to be referred to the Sick Kids.

The appointment was a long wait and my daughter wasn’t getting any better. I was advised by a friend to be referred to a child play specialist, that’s where we met Meghan! Meghan spoke to my daughter and got how she felt, they talked and we visited Meghan a couple of times which improved my daughter's mental health and made her think about things positively and showed her what would happen and let her practice on a fake arm. Then on to a block on her arm to bring a needle towards her.

It did take a few tries at hospital before they got there with her. Meghan, nurses Heather and Magda were all amazing and if it wasn’t for that team goodness know where we would be at the doctors ………..

From the minute we walked in to hospital Meghan was there by her side helping and reassuring her - she is an asset to the Sick Kids and worth the weight in gold! Heather and Meghan worked amazingly together making her feel like she was the only person in hospital and that it would all be OK. Magda was so patient and reassuring.

They are an amazing team and worth every penny it’s cost to put them there, I believe we would be still sitting at home waiting for my daughter's phobia to disappear in to thin air if it was left to the surgery.

Dear Jennifer732,

Thank you very much for taking the time to post your story about your daughters experience in hospital. I have passed on your wonderful comments to the three staff members which you mention and I am glad that by working as a team, they were able to help your daughter. to get her blood test completed.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you require any further input.
