"Two failed hospital admissions"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Accident & Emergency Crosshouse Hospital / Endocrinology and Diabetes General practices in Ayrshire & Arran

(as the patient),

I am in my early 30's and suffer with a rare endocrine disorder adrenal insufficiency which is managed with daily steroids. Sometimes when I have an illness or infection my body cannot fight this off it by itself and my body goes into an ‘adrenal crisis’ which can be fatal.

Unfortunately in October I became unwell with Covid and after a week of trying to fight this off at home I went to my GP knowing I needed extra IV steroids in hospital and my GP who knows me well arranged a hospital admission, they sent me home that night. Then 3 days later with more deteriorating, NHS out of hours sent me to A&E where again I was sent home.

A further 5 days later I contacted my endocrinologist secretary as a final attempt by this point I couldn’t even walk and needed aided as I was on the verge of collapse and then was admitted for 5 days on high dose of IV steroids and fluids.

I feel saddened and upset. I work in healthcare and I would not waste NHS time, and I do not want to be in a hospital bed, however I know my own symptoms and I worry in the future when this happens again and when I am going into crisis that I am going to be dismissed - as my blood cultures come back normal due to this being a rare disease.

Dear KM91x

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience of your health care journey. I am so sorry you feel saddened and upset by this experience and understand this will now be a worry for you should you have the same symptoms in the future.

It's good that your GP knows you well and is able to quickly identify any urgent clinical need you may have and refer you appropriately. I hope this provides you with some reassurance that if a similar situation arises again, to contact your GP at the earliest opportunity or if they're closed NHS 24 (by calling 111).

I hope that you are making a good recovery and should you need similar care in the future, have a more positive experience. Thank you again for providing your feedback.

Kind regards

Marie
