"Waiting far too long"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a carer),

My wife is in her 70s and suffers from PSP. As a result she has severe mobility problems and cannot speak.

She was recently given a shower chair by an OT, supposedly to assist with getting her to the toilet. I had reservations about this but not being a medical professional, I decided to give it a go.

I recently took her to the new chair and to cut a long story short she ended up falling out of it and landing on the floor.

I quickly checked her for injuries then phoned my daughter, who lives fairly close by, to come and assist me. She arrived and we checked her over again before lifting her off the floor and getting her into her adjustable chair.

We again checked her and found she had various bumps and bruises and what appeared to be a lump on her head, which concerned me. I therefore decided to call an ambulance.

I then waited... and waited... and waited for four hours. No ambulance, so I phoned them again, only to be told we could wait up to ten hours!

Eventually, the ambulance arrived. They were very professional, checked my wife over, spoke to the hospital, and it was decided between us to leave my wife at home, albeit she's a bit battered and bruised.

The main point of this story is the five-and-a-half-hour wait for the ambulance to arrive. Is this modern Britain or some third world country?

I do not wholly blame the ambulance service for this as I know ambulances are stuck outside Aberdeen Royal Infirmary  waiting to get patients in.

I feel that something needs to be done about this urgently as the people of Britain deserve better.

In my view, this needs to be resolved, as it is just not good enough to have people who are sick and injured waiting hours and hours just to get into hospital.

Don't give me the excuse of lack of staff as the answer is simple: employ more.

Dear Donniezz

Thank you for sharing your story.

I believe we are currently investigating this matter for you.

Meantime, I can only apologise for the wait and hope that your wife is feeling better.

Kind regards

David
