"Poor access to primary care"

About: General practices in Greater Glasgow & Clyde New Victoria Hospital / Gynaecology Clinic

(as a service user),

I have been trying to make an appointment for my daughter however the staff at the medical practice will not allow me to do so.  The only option is to call every morning at 8.30am until I can get one over the phone and that's the best they can do.

When calling at 8.30am it is common to be on hold for over an hour which makes it hard for working parents who are not allowed their phone at work.  I have no way to get an appointment for my child.  The practice has gone extremely downhill in the past 4 years or so and another negative experience is that I was on a waiting list for over a year only to find out when I went to my gynaecology appointment at the New Victoria hospital, I had been referred to the wrong branch and will have to wait around a year again to be seen by the right team.

There seems to be many incidents of neglect by the GP when you speak to patients throughout the community.  I do not complain about anything NHS related because I respect the staff within it however this is an utter disgrace and something needs done immediately.  How many vulnerable people will not be diagnosed because of the difficulty in making an appointment (a telephone appointment) and most people do not get to see the GP after one of these telephone calls.

I feel so strongly about the massive decline and I would love to know exactly what the reasoning behind it is.  Another situation at a different health centre in the area was my father experiencing severe stomach pain after feeling something pop in his stomach, called GP and they prescribed him medication for constipation despite him protesting that he knows that isn't causing the pain.  My father dealt with the pain for a couple more days and then called GP again where they prescribed Naproxen saying it seems like a pulled muscle.

We had to rush my dad to hospital as he actually had an inguinal hernia that was strangulating and could have been dangerous.  Does this seem like medical care people should be content with? There is no embellishment in what I am saying and I'm sure there are multiple other things I can recall about the disgrace of this GP practice.

People are hesitant to complain because they have respect for the NHS and as a result this massive decline in care has happened.  I genuinely believe that this is going to cost people their lives which is a disgrace in 2023.

Dear Rospr63

I am sorry to hear about the difficulties you are experiencing with making a GP appointment for your daughter and for your Father’s experience with his GP. GP practices in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde operate their own feedback and complaints systems, and unfortunately, are not registered to receive feedback via Care Opinion and will not see your feedback. Can I suggest that you contact the Practice Manager to discuss your concerns about your GP?

Or you may want to contact the Family Health Service Complaints Team who can provide advice about raising a complaint about GP practices. The email address is GCHSCPComplaints@ggc.scot.nhs.uk

Alternatively, you may want to contact The Patient Advice and Support Service (PASS). This is an independent and confidential organisation. PASS can help you give feedback, raise concerns or make a complaint about any health service, including GP practices.

You can contact PASS on 0800 917 2127 or visit their website at Patient Advice & Support Service | Citizens Advice Scotland (www.cas.org.uk ).

Thank you

Nicole
