"Our play specialist helped us more than she knows"

About: Royal Hospital for Children and Young People (Edinburgh) / Play Services

(as a parent/guardian),

My son was admitted last year where he spent over a week. He was also under investigation for autism, with a high level or care, and was being discharged with a feeding tube for long term use.

Lorna told me about YPFF form which I had no idea about and it really helped towards some of the costs whilst being in the hospital. She also told me about the Scottish disability payment (dla) and referred to me kindred who helped me fill out the form.

As a mum, I do everything for my child regardless, but Lorna helped me realise the amount of extra care needs he has compared to another child of his age which encouraged me to look into the form. My son is now in receipt of the Scottish disability which I had no idea about.

My son has been admitted again back on to the ward where we have met Lorna again. She really can't be anymore helpful. Everyone needs a Lorna in their life and she's helped me more than she knows.

Dear Kirsty129,

Thank you for sharing your story with us on Care Opinion. I was sorry to read of your son's admission last year and his requirement for the feeding tube, and then the further admission currently to the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People. I hope he is home soon.

It was lovely to hear how much Lorna has helped you both and also signposted you to the YPFF form and Scottish Disability Payment. I hope this helps you with the daily activities and tasks that your son requires support with. It sounds as if she has been a real support during your time on the ward.

Please be assured we have shared this story with the Play services team and they will be delighted to receive.

Best wishes,

Claire
