"Conduct of staff member"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Accident & Emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

I brought my son along who had severe chest pains and was struggling to breathe. The initial triage was dealt with quickly and then we had the expected wait to see Dr or Nurse.

He was taken through within 50 minutes and was asked to come let me know that I would not be allowed to come through to the assessment room. The waiting room was busy and as he left to go back to the assessment room a member of staff appeared shouting his name. I felt this member of staff was extremely rude, shouting at my son why didn’t you listen to me, nobody ever listens.

The member of staff continued to shout at my son all the way back to the assessment area. I was very uncomfortable and everyone in the room looked over. Other patients commented on how rude and unprofessional this member of staff had been.

If this is how staff are trained to communicate with patients and think it’s acceptable to humiliate them or their families in public, then the NHS is in a worst position than I thought.

I lost my mum in the same hospital and this was the first time back since. This experience made a worrying time even more traumatic.

Dear Humilatemum

Thank you for taking the time to share your story.

I am sorry to hear about your experience whilst attending the A&E Department with your son, which left you feeling embarrassed and humiliated. This is not the standard of care we aim to deliver.

I appreciate that it would have been a painful and emotional experience for you to return to the hospital after losing your Mum, and I apologise for the additional upset this caused.

I would like to reassure you that your story will be shared with the staff in A&E so that they can reflect on their practice to ensure this does not happen again.

Please pass on my apologies to your son and I hope he is feeling better.

Take Care

Nicole

Update posted by Humilatemum (a parent/guardian)

Thank you for responding. I should have noted that the nursing staff were helpful and friendly with the exception of this individual who was a support member of staff.

My son was sent home and deteriorated over 5 days. He attended the QEUH where he was turned away and advised that there was nothing wrong with him by reception.

He was eventually sent to Forth Valley Hospital where he was admitted and the source of pain identified. The care he received there was excellent and hopefully now he can begin recovery.
