"Mistreated"

About: Lagan Valley Hospital / Urgent Care Centre

(as a relative),

Me and my partner had went to A&E as advised by his doctor for a infection in his ear that had swollen and needed to be drained we had rang before hand and was no answer after 30 minutes of ringing we then went to A&E and then told to come back the next day. So we came back at the time we were given first of all was not logged that we were to come in and the receptionist who had seen us the day before sat and watched as we tried to book in with their co worker as if they had never seen us before, then caught on when I said it was them who seen and booked us the day before. This staff member then laughed then we were told to wait as would be a while due to the long wait.

My partner went outside the door for not even 5 minutes and a staff member came out saying that we had been outside when a doctor had been calling his name, this was not appropriate or appreciated. We then over heard the waiting time and asked how long it would be before he was seen.

Could not give a time while the receptionist took out their lunch at their desk and sat on their phone. As someone who works in a similar industry I know food is not allowed in a clinical area. We then decided we should go home as was not an emergency and didn’t want to take someone’s place who would need it more and a snarky comment was made when we said we would leave would not be for returning to this A&E again unfortunately.

Hi User98

Thank you for telling us of your experience while attending the Phone First Urgent Care centre at Lagan Valley. Lagan Valley is no longer an Accident and Emergency Department and hasn't been for 2 years so you may have been unaware that there is no longer a walk in Accident and Emergency service there. General Practitioners in the area have been repeatedly informed of the need to remind patients that they must ring ahead for an appointment.

Often there are between 80 and120 patients who attend in a 12 hour period and I would not expect the receptionist to remember every patient. People are not logged prior to attending as there are a number of patients who do not attend despite having an appointment and this then blocks that appointment should some one else need it or does not accurately reflect numbers of attendance when it is audited.

Reception is not an area where patients are examined and treated and therefore not considered a clinical area. Waiting times are approximate as it is not possible to give an exact time of how long it will take to fully assess and treat a patient and it can be longer or shorter depending on findings.

I would like to apologise for the attitude you encountered and I will share this with the admin lead to address. I do hope the detail above helps to answer some of your questions and inform you of the process which differs from an Accident and Emergency department.

I do hope your partner was able to receive the treatment he required in an appropriate setting.

Best Wishes

Jenny
