"Thank you for not giving up"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Trauma & orthopaedics (wards 26, 27, 61 & 62 )

(as a service user),

I have had problems with my knee for many years with numerous surgeries to try to correct the problem. Sadly, none were fully successful and for a long time now I have been in significant levels of pain. I have become less able to do things for myself and my whole life has been affected. I have been able to get out less and less and take part in virtually none of my hobbies or interests for a very long time. The pain I have been in for so long has taken over my life.

Then a few years ago I was referred to Mr Blythe as an expert in the field. Really as a last attempt to try to resolve things because it had become so complicated. I have had many appointments with him. He has always been kind, patient , approachable and courteous. Despite being incredibly busy he has listened to my point of view and taken into consideration the very real impact this problem has been having on my life.

He has always been open and honest around the pros and cons of any surgery and allowed me to come to an informed decision about what I wanted to do. I have gone through a few surgeries with him. Each time it helped a bit but I was still left with significant issues which I knew could happen.

My most recent surgery was only a few weeks ago though, and this time the impact has been amazing. My pain has reduced. My leg looks almost normal again. I am getting my life back. For this I would like to say thank you to Mr Blythe. Thank you for not giving up. Thank you for listening to me. Thank you for the immense skill with which you have treated me. What you have done for me has quite simply been life changing.

Dear Rowantree44

Thank you for taking the time to share your story. I am sorry to read that your previous surgeries were unsuccessful and the impact this has had on your quality of life. I am pleased to hear about the support you have received from Mr Blythe and that he has taken the time to listen to you and discuss the pros and cons of the surgeries. I am delighted that your recent surgery has reduced your pain and that you are getting your life back. I will ensure that this feedback is shared with Mr Blythe.

I wish you well with your recovery.

Best wishes

Nicole
