"Follow up for surgical patients"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Emergency Surgical Unit (EMSU) Antrim Area Hospital / Ward C4 Male Surgical

(as a carer),

My husband was admitted via A&E for emergency surgery recently.

At that time, the staff on C4 were brilliant. Surgery all went smoothly and the care he received was great. However, he has had ongoing issues with his wound.

We have since attended EMSU twice, trying to get it sorted with no joy. We are now 11 weeks down the line with an open wound that no one else is concerned about. Have left 3 voicemails with the surgeon's secretary, but have had no response.

This has made for a very worrying time after an initially positive experience. Appears to be very little follow up for surgical patients once they leave the hospital and we feel we are being left with no choice but to attend A&E again to see a medic.

Hi neptuneqx83

My name is Helen and I work as an advanced nurse practitioner in the surgical department in Antrim hospital. I'm glad you husband's surgery went well and that he received great care.

I'm sorry he has had ongoing wound issues. I see you have attended A&E, if your problem is not resolved I'm happy to discuss this further and attempt to resolve the issue.

You can contact me in EMSU via Antrim hospital switchboard, I'm away on a training course but will be in work Thursday 2nd Nov and Friday 3rd Nov if you want to contact me.

Kind regards

Helen Davis

Dear neptuneqx83,

Thank you so much for taking the time to document you and your husbands experience, we find the feedback invaluable in our development as a ward and a team. I am delighted that you and your husband had a positive experience in ward C4 and I will be taking your comments back to all the staff.

I am sorry to hear that your husband has had ongoing wound issues, which can be very frustrating and hinder recovery, and I would encourage you to avail of Helens invitation to contact her directly. I would also be happy to discuss this with you, and assist you in anyway, if you would like to contact me to ward C4 directly.

I wish your husband a speedy recovery, and thanks once again for your feedback!
