"Outpatient hysteroscopy"

About: Lincoln County Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I attended Lincoln hospital for a consultation and a hysteroscopy. I was told this procedure could be uncomfortable and I should take a couple of ibuprofen before my appointment. I did so. But nothing prepared me for the pain. The insertion was appallingly painful - and then polyps removed and biopsy taken. No anaesthetic was offered. I am embarrassed to say I was crying out with the pain. I don’t know why I should be embarrassed.

I am still traumatised by the experience. I have described it to friends in an effort to make light of the awful experience as medieval torture. I was told by the nurses and consultant that I did very well and my apologies for shouting out were graciously declined. But at no point was I told it is common for this to be a very unpleasant procedure for many women, and that there are support groups available.

Women should be far better prepared in advance for what they are about to face at the very least - but certainly offered effective anaesthetic. This experience has seriously damaged my trust in medical professionals.
