Recently in October my husband was admitted to RVH in Belfast with a new diagnosis of diverticulitis. Having spent a night in a corridor, which in itself is wholly unacceptable due to lack of dignity and privacy, he was transferred to ward 6a, again to stay in a corridor. This new policy of treating any patient like this is appalling.
The transfer took place at dinner time which meant he didn't get a dinner that night. He was told he could have a voucher for the canteen but wasn't told the canteen closes in the evening meaning he had to go to the overpriced shop for food. He got discharged with oral antibiotics and pain relief. He has been told at some point he will need a CTC which I assume is a colonoscopy but no date. Also no referral to a dietician or a specialist nurse for a new diagnosis of a chronic condition which does mean some changes to diet. Luckily we have some knowledge of the condition and have been able to research online. I usually would be the first to advise against Dr Google but there hasn't even been an advise leaflet given out.
I feel this really could have been handled much better. I don't feel the standard expected has been met, compared to others I have heard of in different trusts. I appreciate resources are stretched but sending someone home with a new diagnosis and no education whatsoever is just waiting for a readmission and this does nothing to alleviate the strains on the trust.
