"Mixed experience after emergency surgery"

About: Lincoln County Hospital / General surgery Lincoln County Hospital / X-ray and Scans

(as a service user),

I arrived Monday via ambulance and had been pre-admitted from Grantham waited two hours to be examined, when examined the consultant was abrasive, kept telling me to relax whilst I was experiencing severe pain and and cramps. Was told I needed a scan and would get one in the morning.

Tuesday, was told wouldn't get scan until late that evening, they did manage to find an earlier slot and had one at lunch and the report would be ready in minutes. Report was not done and had to be chased up by consultant as nurses had tried.

Wednesday lunch report from scan was finally done and I was told I needed emergency surgery due to internal bleeding, the consultant on that day was lovely and caring along with the anaesthetist.

Had surgery at 5:45pm .

Did not have vitals or observations done throughout the night this can be confirmed by my partner who spent the night with me. Pain relief had to be requested and was not offered. I did request every few hours.

Thursday asked nursing staff and consultant if partner could stay another night and was told he could, he had been taking me to the bathroom and helping as I was very wobbly.

10:30pm a nurse came in and kicked him out despite me telling her that he had been allowed to stay by other staff but still ordered him to leave. Her reasoning being it that it was a female only ward and mainly female staff and they didn't feel safe both me and him were offended by.

That evening at 11pm my bed was changed for the first time since arriving, it had blood stains on from blood being drawn on Tuesday.

Friday was discharged was not told anything about what to expect post op, and was told that the hospital would be in touch to book a scan 1 week post op to make sure everything was ok, it is now over a week and I have called to follow up and I get told to ring other departments and half the time phone just keeps ringing.

Other notes but can't remember days: asked for pain meds as I was due, took two hours and multiple calls on the buzzer. It took them 20mins to come to a nurse call on buzzer. Would ask for water and they'd forget so would have to ring again after waiting an hour. When I asked for water member or staff rolled her eyes and sighed.

There were some lovely members of staff that were helpful, kind and compassionate, unfortunately this wasn't the majority.
