"Poor follow up from staff following hip steroid injections"

About: NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) University Hospital Ayr / Day Surgery

(as the patient),

I attended the hospital via my consultant. On arrival all was good and the staff were very attentive. I was given bilateral steroid injections to both hips.

During the waiting /recovery department I felt great and looked forward to walking and other daily tasks. Possibly next move would be new hips.
Before leaving the section I was advised by the staff member to keep a record every day of the progress and for any progress in walking and comfort.

I was in serious pain down the hip, thigh, and calf muscles were all locked/stiff with severe pain. I also had overall body pain head, arms, face eyes and normal pain relief tablets would not help.

I attempted to take the options to reduce pain but they did not help.I called 111 and went through my health problem with the 111 staff, who were helpful.

They thought my symptoms were a stroke and came to my house at midnight to check me out. That was a doctor and a paramedic. It appears I have a bad flare-up from the steroid injections and advised me to take pain relief tablets for a few days and call back if issue does not improve.

By the following week, I was no better so I called the Day surgery and spoke to a member of staff who tried to help.

I overheard another staff member call out just go to A&E. The department basically did not want to know my problem..

I was angry that I was not allowed to speak to a senior member of staff to at least advise me on what I should do. Nor could I drive over to speak to them due to the pain in my body.

On leaving the hospital on the day of the injections, I was informed by senior members of the team who injected the hips to keep a daily report, which turned out to be a waste of time.

Since that time I have spoken to A&E and a doctor again advised to see my doctor for an assessment.

As I write I have called for help several times to 111, I still have l body pain, pins and needles throughout areas of my body.

A&E said it's over 7 days and they could not help but they would send a message to my doctor to assess my condition. My overview was good during the visit but have to complain about the advice given and the lack of thought by the staff /department on seeking help due to a flare-up reaction to the injections.

I am now going into 21 days of pain and now waiting to speak to my doctor today if I can get some form of assessment of the pain and medicine required. My walking stide has improved but the pain is terrible.

I am angry that the Ayr Hospital Day Surgery decided to ignore my call for advice/help.

I am not impressed. There must have been a breakdown of procedure when advised to keep a record, and having a problem I feel they closed shop and ignored me.

Dear tigeryt97

I'm so sorry to read the detail of your story. This sounds like a hugely challenging time for you and I sincerely hope things improve soon. I see my colleagues within NHS Ayrshire & Arran are tagged to your story to enable them to respond.

I note you have had contact with NHS 24 on 111 several times. If there is anything specific you would like us to review in relation to your calls to us, then I would be pleased to do this. You can contact me on 07814 299944 or email Patient.Experience@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk

Being in constant pain is hugely difficult to cope with. I hope this is managed soon and you get some relief from this.

Take care meantime.

Shona
