I attended the breast clinic having found a lump on my breast. I was seen by a doctor who had a medical student with them.
The doctor was very abrupt, didn't introduce themself or the student. They asked me nothing about my lump, literally said your GP said... I was then told to go behind the screen on the couch etc. The doctor examined me then told the student to do the same without checking it was ok. It was, but that's not the point. Neither of them washed their hands prior to or after touching me. Just used gel.
I went for a mammogram and returned to the clinic. Was called in and told there was nothing on my mammogram, end of conversation. I asked what the lump was, advised probably scar tissue. No they would not remove it, despite it being uncomfortable. Eventually was given a leaflet on breast pain, I think to appease me and literally dismissed.
I left feeling angry, bewildered and not greatly reassured by the disrespect, rudeness, lack of interest and compassion that I received. I appreciate the NHS is busy, understaffed etc but simple manners and a bit of compassion go a long way to reassure people who attend these appointments in panic mode.
