"Removal of Adnexal Lesion (ovarian cyst)"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / General Surgery (Wards 16-18) University Hospital Wishaw / Gynaecology (Ward 13) University Hospital Wishaw / Pre Operative Assessment University Hospital Wishaw / Theatres, Recovery & Anaesthetics

(as a service user),

Having had Bilateral Kidney cancer in 2016-2017 I get a CT Thorax Scan once a year and an MRI Scan. I had my CT in Jan, then my results from the Urology nurse in Feb. It informed me everything was ok with my kidney but they found an adnexal lesion. It referred me to Wishaw General Hospital under Dr Bhat.

I went to see Dr Bhat at ward 13 gynaecology in  Wishaw General Hospital who talked it over with me and having had cancer before referring me to an ultrasound. Shortly after, Dr Bhat called and told me she changed it to an MRI as this would be better. I had my MRI in June, then went to see Dr Bhat again. I had a couple of calls from Dr Bhat during these appointments and this made me feel assured as with my kidney cancer consultants. although they were great at their job I was used to communication by letter. Dr Bhat went over the results telling me it was over 7 cm and with various factors, that I was a high risk patient. Dr Bhat was very clear about everything but also warm and empathic and you could tell how much she cared for me as her patient and wanted the best for me. They decided it would be best to remove the ovaries and tubes along with the cyst. If the cyst was borderline or cancerous then I would be admitted for a hysterectomy. Because I am such a high risk patient it was decided this was the best way forward with which I agreed as Dr Bhat and her colleagues are the professionals. Dr Bhat informed me it would probably be 2 to 4 weeks for surgery or possibly longer. I would get my appointment for my pre-assessment.
I had my pre-assessment at Wishaw General during which my ECG found an regular heartbeat. I then got an appointment for a monitor to be fitted. In early August , also an echocardiogram a few days later. The monitor was monitor before I had a echocardiogram, and then I received a call saying everything was okay for that operation to go ahead. I received the date at the end of August for my surgery. I ended up having pain on my right side before surgery and the doctor sent me up to the hospital to ward 13 gynaecology . They examined me and said I could go home with painkillers if I wanted to which I did, and Came to the hospital, the next day for my surgery. I arrived and was shown into a waiting room then to a ward. The anaesthetist was in a few times to see me to make sure things were ok and if it was to go ahead. Dr Bhat came to see me and I felt so reassured by her and her team. I prepared for surgery and into the theatre where they gave me anaesthetic was administered in my lower back them I was put to sleep. I awoke in a recovery ward and was then  transferred  to ward 13 where I was checked every two hours plus an IV of anti-biotics.
The next day Dr Bhat came to see me and explained everything regarding the operation and told me she thought assess looked benign. Ask me how I was feeling and everything and I just find her so lovely and approachable. She has such a warm personality and because you’re such a feeling that she cares so much about to have patients. Dr Bhat explained that the biopsy would probably take 2-4 weeks for the result to come through. I was informed that I may be able to go home so they checked everything and everything seems fine and I was allowed to have my antibiotics and tablet form so I was discharged today after my surgery later in the afternoon. I did end up having an infection in the wound above my bellybutton though that has nothing to do with the care I received as I had infection when I had my kidney surgery and was at risk of infection with this one. I also cleaned and dressed the wound with medical wipes etc. I attended my local GP give me another course anti-biotics which seem to clear the infection up. I received a call from Dr Bhat in September, she asked me how I was doing and then went on to inform me she had received the results of the biopsy and thought it best to call me and let me know and that that the cyst what was benign. I was so happy with the results and so appreciative that Dr Bhat had called me and send a letter out. I am so grateful for Dr Bhat and her team for the work they have done and appreciate you so much. For her professionalism, the way she makes you feel at ease, and the warm positive manner in which she speaks to you. I wish all doctors were like Dr Bhat and had the warm engaging and caring personality. Even with the seriousness of the situation it was a pleasure to have her as my Doctor and if anything else should happen with gynaecological issues I would definitely want Dr Bhat. I cannot express how grateful I am to her and happy she was my doctor.
