About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Radiotherapy Dr Gray's Hospital / Acute Medical Admissions Unit Dr Gray's Hospital / High Dependancy Unit Dr Gray's Hospital / Out Patients Department

(as a service user),

I was admitted as an emergency case to Dr Gray's hospital in Elgin in February 2023 following a quick response by my GP following routine blood results. In the high dependency unit, I was diagnosed with pneumonia, sepsis and a fungal infection iny mouth and immediately put on intravenous antibiotics, blood transfusions and various other drips. My blood pressure was dangerously low and my body was failing. The quick response of the medical team in Elgin saved my life. After sending bloods to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, it turned out that I have Acute Myeloid Leukaemia and the team sent me by ambulance to Aberdeen.

This was in the space of four days. The care I received in Elgin and later in Aberdeen was excellent. I am very grateful for having a hospital in Elgin. Having this service literally saved my life. My aftercare has also been great. I now have bloods taken at Dr Gray's before each round of chemo in Aberdeen. Staff are friendly, helpful and make what is a difficult time in my life more bearable. I have the highest regard for the team at Dr Gray's and the Anchor Unit in Aberdeen under Dr Culligan and feel like I'm in safe hands. I feel it is essential to preserve and enhance our hospital service in Moray given the distances involved in going to Aberdeen. A big thank you to all the doctor's, nurses, support staff and volunteers who have helped me so far on this long journey. You are the best.

Dear Labaml

Many thanks for your feedback following your hospital stays in both Elgin and Aberdeen and your subsequent ongoing care.

I am delighted to read the impact the care that the staff delivered had on you and the teams response to your medical needs, at what must have been a very difficult time for you.

We always strive to deliver a high standard of person centred care and the team will be so pleased to read the positive impact that their care had.

With thanks and best wishes.

Hi Fiona,

Many thanks for your reply. I forgot to mention the amazing patient transport drivers. I've made over 40 trips with them back and forth between Elgin and Aberdeen. They are all brilliant! This is such an essential service. I am unable to take the bus due to my immune system and can't drive the distances required to meet chemo appointments. If I didn't have this service, I would not be able to get to Aberdeen for treatment, which is seven days a month at the moment. One thing that would make things easier is funding to stay at Clan Haven for chemo patients. My postcode makes me eligible but only radiotherapy patients are funded.

Hello

Thanks for your updated post. I appreciate the impact that travel will have on you and so glad that you are able to access the patient transport, ensuring that you are able to attend your appointments allowing your treatment to continue.

I will ensure that your post is passed to the patient transport team, they will also be delighted to know how essential their role is for our patients.

Regards

Fiona
