"Care of the Elderly - NOT"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Care of the Elderly (Wards 13-16)

(as a relative),

Dad had covid and was in ward 18.  They got to understand how to work with him as obviously he was more confused than normal due to his dementia. I got a call asking me to call the ward.  When I called back I was informed that dad had been moved to ward 15 - no reason or rationale.  I then called Ward 15 and was told that the ward was closed due to covid and to call the ward Manager about visiting etc due to Dad's dementia.

Whilst ward 15 have communicated and been responsive to my queries and requests to visit I do have to question Ward 18's decision on the move of a frail patient with dementia.  We now have to wear PPE when visiting which will confuse dad no end.  It is also putting the family members at risk of catching covid as well.  All unnecessary if he had remained in ward 18.

No communication with family prior to the move happening.  I do not feel this is "fair care" for dementia patients.

Dear lyragx33,

Thank you for sharing your experience at University Hospital Hairmyres, Care of the Elderly.

I am so sorry to hear about the break down in communication and the lack of clarity as to why your dad was moved from Ward 18. I can only imagine how frustrating and upsetting this situation must be for yourself and other family members. I am also aware that wearing PPE when visiting your dad must be difficult for family members and for your dad.

Can I please ask you to contact University Hospital Hairmyres Patient Affairs so they can understand all the issues in more detail, and get back to you personally.

Dear lyragx33

I am sorry to read your comments regarding the communication in relation to the care of your father. I would have expected ward 18 to fully explain the rationale for moving your father to ward 15 and I am sorry that this did not happen.

Myself or senior nurse Jackie Baird would be happy to discuss your concerns in person if this would be helpful.

Please contact Patient Affairs on 01355 585325

or email PatientAffairs.Hairmyres@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk

Again my apologies for the poor communication to you and your family.

Lise
