At the end of March 2023 I went to see my GP in Inverurie as I'd been experiencing frequent urination and blood in my urine. He referred me to the UCAN centre at ARI where I was examined by a consultant. Based on his rectal examination and my high PSA level, he was fairly sure I had advanced prostate cancer. That was confirmed by subsequent tests (biopsy, cystoscopy, bone scan and CT scan). I was referred to a consultant at the Oncology Unit who put me on a course of hormone treatment; daily Abiraterone tablets and a 12-weekly hormone injection.
I've been going to Inverurie Hospital every two weeks to have blood samples taken, and there have been telephone appointments with the oncology unit every four weeks to discuss progress. So far the treatment seems to have been effective; there have been no noticeable side effects and I feel well.
Despite my unwelcome diagnosis, I've been pleased with the treatment I've received. Everyone has been very professional. I appreciate the regular feedback I receive, and I especially like the fact that my blood samples can be taken at Inverurie.
