"Fracture clinic"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Trauma & Orthopaedics

(as a parent/guardian),

My son had broken radius and ulna-seen at fracture clinic who issued a splint to wear for 2 weeks post plaster cast removal. Contacted the clinic to ask to be issued with another wrist splint due to very hot weather and having to repeatedly wash the splint and was refused, stating only 1 splint is issued. Concerns raised re hot weather, son perspiring and possible infection but still refused. I found them very obstructive.

The outcome of this now being is my son has a pseudomonas infection on his hand and arm and is on antibiotics. I believe all of this could have been prevented had we been listened to and issued a second splint to change and thoroughly wash. Not good enough to be told ‘you only get one’

Good afternoon trapperfd33,

Please accept my sincere apologies that this was your experience. This should not have been the case for your son, there is not a blanket rule that each individual should receive one splint. While we encourage our staff to consider their financial spend, environmental waste and wastage of stock, this should have been taken at an individual merit and all facts considered.

Please contact me, as the Senior Charge Nurse for Fracture Clinic (phone number available through switchboard) if you would like to further discuss this further, provide the secondary splint (if not already acquired) or address any concerns.

Kind regards

Nicola

Many thanks for your reply.

We sadly had to purchase a second splint ourselves, due to staff refusing to issue one.

None of the comments or concerns over the phone were listened to or taken into account.

Our overall experience from A&E, ward 29, main suite theatres was an extremely positive one, it’s a pity it was tainted by something which appears to be rather single-minded and certainly not patient-centred.
