"Staff go above & beyond but there have been a few issues"

About: Daisy Hill Hospital / Elective Overnight Stay Centre/Gynaecology Ward

(as the patient),

I have been in hospital now for over three weeks and I am now starting to feel a bit better. The staff have been going above & beyond for me. In particular, I would like to mention Christina, Dina, Simone and Dervla who have all been brilliant. The Healthcare Assistants have all been fantastic – they do far more than they have to do and are incredibly overworked – especially at night time.

However, there have been a couple of issues whilst I have been here. Last week when I was extremely unwell, a patient was moved in next to me who had a one-to-one nurse. He started getting agitated and throwing things across the ward. I had to let the nurse know that I didn’t feel safe and thankfully they were moved straight away. Another issue I noticed was that a member of staff came down from surgery and was roaring at the nurse on the ward which I thought was absolutely unacceptable.

Everything on the ward has been clean and the food has been good. I really couldn’t ask for better care. The only other issue I have noticed is that there is a great lack of staff. For instance, last night there was no female healthcare assistant on the ward, so if someone wanted to go to the toilet, you had to either wait for the nurse who is already incredibly busy or have a male HCA take you, which isn’t something every woman would be comfortable with. Everything else has been fine.

Dear airmt58,

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback on Care Opinion. I will make sure that the nursing staff you have named are made aware of your lovely comments.

I am sorry that during your inpatient stay you had a period where you felt unsafe due to another patient’s behaviour and I am really glad you felt able to express your concerns to the nursing staff so they could take action. I am disappointed to read that you witnessed a confrontation between staff, I can confirm the Ward Sr has followed up on this with staff.

Thank you for also sharing your negative experiences with us; we appreciate every form of feedback.

Wishing you continued good health.
