"I could not even look at the meals, they were making me ill"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Trauma & Orthopaedics

(as a service user),

I had surgery recently. I required a low residue gluten free diet. Out of the 10 days I was there, I received gluten free meals twice.

I asked ward staff assisting with meals why I was not receiving gluten free meals and the only response I got was that that's all they're sending for me.

I could not even look at the meals, they were making me ill.

They also ran out of biscuits and juice and no one informed us the patients of low stock.

Hello my name is Celina McConnellogue ward manager of ward 23,

I am very sorry that you had a very unpleasant experience with the meals whilst you were on the ward, there was technical issues on ordering meals that resulted in some meals not arriving to the wards as requested by staff. This was raised with managers at the time and has since been resolved.

It is paramount that our patient receive the correct meals for their dietary reequipments and we will continue to monitor that service of meals is correct.

Wishing you a speedy recovery,

Kind regards

Celina

Hello my name is Joanne Daly, Support Services Manager and I am extremely sorry that you experienced issues with your ordered meals during your hospital stay.

Support Services will work closely with our nursing colleagues to ensure that any issues are addressed in a timely fashion. There are low residue and gluten free options available at all meal service but unfortunately there were some issues during your stay that the team will discuss with nursing colleagues and ensure do not occur on an going basis.

Best wishes on your recovery

Joanne.
