"My brother inlaw"

About: Newham General Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a relative),

I am not happy with Newham Hospital.

Before he went in hospital, he wasn’t washing himself. Also, he didn’t take his medication for two years. He was peeing and pooing on the floor as he had no control over his bowels. Then, in June, he went to the toilet at home and shit all over the floor. After that he went in the bedroom and came over funny, fell over, so we got an ambulance out. They were very good.

We went up to the hospital A&E. It wasn’t too bad but when he went to Tayberry Ward, he kept lying to the nurse because before he went in, he would leave the cooker on at home. He smoked and only took a lit smoke. The flats would have gone out if I hadn’t cleaned up after him where he peed and shit on the floor. It’s been 272 hours since they changed him to Silver Town Ward, which is worse than Tayberry Ward. It appeared that every nurse didn’t know what they were doing. Social services want to send him home even though we keep trying that we want a dementia test because he keeps forgetting things at home and sees people there that weren’t there. Fast forward.

He came home after that at 2pm in the day.   Since being at home, he took off his pull-up and peed all over the floor. I had to help him up out of his bed and hold onto the walker so I could do his sheet. I had to get him on the walker and help him back to bed as a carer was there at the time. He wanted diet coke because we wouldn’t get it straight away, so he got angry with us. Then, 4 days later, he hadn’t opened his bowel for 4 days because hospital was open his bowel for him so we said they shouldn’t have sent him home in first place because ambulance was on strike and we weren’t classed as emergency.

My boyfriend’s brother came down with the car and we got near car when he fell over and we heard his shoulder crack and his eyes were rolling. He couldn’t talk to us or nothing. Then, he went to the hospital to see a nurse. The nurse aske why was he discharged in the first place when the hospital opened his bowel for him?  She asked if I had signed him out, I said no, that they just sent him home with a care package.

The carer was useless and only there for not even 5 minutes. When he went on the wards, I thought okay. We kept telling social services that he needed 24-hour care and needed to go into a care home. They said yes. It got worse as he couldn’t stand because he had nerve damage and toe damage due to diabetes. He has now been in the hospital for two weeks. They said he fractured his shoulder but when we were told early August he hasn’t fractured his shoulder. He is getting better on his foot and will be coming home with a care package and a carer when he can’t take care of himself. The hospital is a joke. All they seem to want is his bed. So, I told them if they send him home, we want a letter in writing. Anything that happens, they are going to take full responsibility for it. If he falls again at home and we don’t get a letter and sign it, we are not coming out as we can’t look after him due to my boyfriend’s and my health.
