My relative was admitted to the acute assessment unit and was treated with great respect. The unit was overflowing with patients and the poor nursing and medical staff were run off their feet. As a nurse myself I understood that the sickest patients had to be seen to first, but the staff were very kind and considerate to everyone, not only my family member but what I could hear around me they were very patient and kind with everyone.
Sitting waiting I could hear across from me some unsatisfied patients speaking to staff quite out of order, but the staff in the assessment unit acted professionally and patiently.
I spent 13 hours with my relative, and all that time staff were always coming to re-assure me that we were not forgotten. I totally understood the pressure they were under.
When the night staff came on duty, they were continually asking me if I would like a cup of tea or water and were very kind to me.
The nurses, healthcare assistants and xray staff were all very gently with my family member, and re-assured her with all they were doing.
The young doctor who was on duty came and explained all the results of my family members tests and he gave us all the time we needed to ask questions.
My heart goes out to the staff in both A&E and the Acute Assessment Unit with the stress they are under, yet they can all keep a brave smile on and be kind to everyone.
Please pass on to them what a wonderful job they do because I am sure they must feel demoralised and deflated at times.
"They all keep a brave smile on and are kind to everyone"
