"Removal of hoist"

About: WestMARC (Glasgow)

(as a parent/guardian),

As WestMARC in Yorker is a drop in service, I took our daughter, who is a wheelchair user and cannot walk or stand, to WestMARC this morning as we had quite an urgent issue with her wheelchair. I took along our sling, expecting them to have a hoist, but was told it had been removed for health and safety issues for staff.  I suffer from a sore back and was on my own with our daughter as my husband was at work, so the options I had were either to lift her myself as she cannot transfer, or go home and an engineer would be booked to come out.

As our daughter only has the one wheelchair, we needed the issue resolved quickly so had no alternative but to lift her myself.  It seems totally ludicrous to remove a hoist from a facility which specialises in wheelchair repairs and is a drop in facility.  I sincerely hope whoever made the decision to remove this invaluable piece of equipment has a rethink, and quickly!

Dear Melanie 23, thank you for your comments. I am sorry to hear of the challenges you experienced at our Yoker drop in service. I can only image how anxiety provoking this must have been for you and your daughter. I do hope the urgency with your daughters chair was resolved for you both satisfactorily.

I can provide assurances that this situation will be passed on to the appropriate senior manager to address going forward, as I can hear from your post that the removal of the hoist is unacceptable especially as your daughter is unable to transfer herself and the decision to remove the hoist now requires to be reconsidered.

I will keep you updated you via the link in this post, however if you wish to speak to me directly, please contact me on 0300 790 0129.

Many thanks

Angela
