"Left on my own with no support"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Maternity care Perth Royal Infirmary / Community Midwifery Unit

(as a service user),

I fell pregnant with my first child after being told I couldn’t have children and would require fertility treatment. I did my referral form and then heard nothing.

I phoned to speak to a midwife as I thought I could have been further along than expected, as far along as 16 weeks, but after me phoning four times in the space of a week and a half, no one ever phoned me back. I turned up at the hospital unannounced to speak to a midwife as it seemed the only way someone would talk to me. They did my forms and then that was it, no scan to find out how far along I was so we knew what treatment I needed, just told to wait until I was ‘12 weeks’ whenever this may have been because I didn’t know.

I still never spoke to or knew who my allocated midwife was as it was just a midwife on shift who dealt with me. Fast forward a few weeks and I experienced bleeding (I also have a blood disorder). I phoned PRI and out of hours at Ninewells five times over five days as symptoms were getting worse at times and I was terrified.

The midwives I spoke to were unbelievably rude and said unless I’m bleeding through every hour, just take paracetamol. I felt completely fobbed off. I attended Ninewells on the Sunday afternoon after I phoned haematology out of hours and they demanded I was seen as a matter of urgency and this is where I was told my baby had no heartbeat and had been passed away for up to three weeks. I underwent a surgical management of a miscarriage operation and then that was it, left on my own, no support on dealing with this as a first time mother, my badger notes closed down and still never heard from my ‘midwife’ whoever that actually was.

Oh, PRI also phoned me two days after my surgery to remove my deceased child to rearrange my ‘12 week’ scan as their machine was broken and this obviously left me distraught.

What was supposed to be the happiest moment of my life turned into a nightmare. I dread falling pregnant again and being in their care. I would genuinely pay to go privately
