"I fell off a ladder and broke lots of bones"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Accident and emergency North Devon District Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Fell off ladder. Ambulance came within 45mins. Ambulance staff were very good. Placed me in a neck brace and inflatable back support/stretcher. Admitted to A&E. Long wait for scans of my back. A&E consultant ok duty frustrated by the delay that was at least 6hrs and a further couple of hours for results. A&E staff very good.

Scans showed broken vertebrae, broken ribs, broken arm and shattered elbow.

Moved from A&E to a ‘holding ward’. Not a good experience. Tucked around a corner away from sight from anyone and on my own. Night staff (two nurses) did little to make me feel looked after or cared for. I was in a lot of pain and discomfort Bolton Uni trainee was very attentive.

Moved to orthopaedic ward and everyone there was amazing. The nurses (many of them relatively young and new to the profession) were kind, caring, professional and truly inspirational. 4 days stay in hospital waiting for parts for my elbow and once I was on orthopaedic ward everything was very good.

Dear chassisee66,

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback, receiving patient feedback is vitally important to all services for continual learning and development.

I am sorry to hear of the delays you had to receive your scan. But I am glad to hear that the Emergency Department staff were good. I will ensure that your feedback is shared with the Emergency Department team and the Major Trauma Team here at NDDH. Unfortunately care opinion does anonymise patient information so I am unable to look the care and treatment you received on the wards after your A&E stay. If you would like for me to review and share your feedback with these areas please feel free to contact me via e-mail sophie.grills@nhs.net.

I hope you are recovering well from your injuries, thank you again for taking the time to provide us your feedback.

Kind regards

Sophie Grills
ED Governance & Operational Support Manager & Deputy Managerial Lead for Major Trauma

Dear Chasisee66

Thank you for recently leaving feedback on Care Opinion. I wanted to reach out to ask if you would be interested in sharing your experience further? Our Engagement team share a monthly story with the Board of Directors. The aim is to allow our executive and non-executive directors to understand the issues they are discussing from the perspective of the patient. The stories normally take the form of a five minute video interview that is pre-recorded.

Your story has been identified as one that the Engagement team would like to explore further as it may be suitable for featuring in a patient story. If you are interested in being involved and would like to find out a little more, please would you email me your name and contact details to me privately at: rduh.patientexperience@nhs.net.

With your consent I will put you in touch with the Engagement team who will find out more about your experience and consider whether it might be suitable for a patient story interview. if it would be suitable and you can find out a little more about the process before you agree next steps.

Once again thank you for leaving feedback. It really does make a difference to improving our services.

Kind regards

Lisa
