"Told to come back tomorrow"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

I attended Hairmyres A&E with a suspected broken ankle.

At the point of injury, my foot went suddenly numb, and then proceeded to become tingly. The NHS website said that this may indicate a serious issue and requires immediate attention.
After waiting for 4 hours in A&E, I was eventually taken by the triage nurse who, without even looking at my foot, told me to come back tomorrow as they were too busy to see me tonight.
After I pushed, the nurse did look at my ankle and ask some basic questions, but all in all, was very vague and said it was my choice whether to return tomorrow and try again.
One thing I did notice while waiting was that several loud people seemed to take priority when they shouted, cried or demanded attention, which was disappointing.

Dear ComeBack Tomorrow

I am sorry to read that you waited over 4 hrs for triage and felt that you were then not appropriately assessed before being advised to re-attend the next day. We would expect a prompt triage assessment and I apologise that this was not provided.

The minor injuries area is staffed by nurse practitioners during the day, 0900 - 2100hrs. If an injury is not time critical, patients are asked to return the next day as it is important that resource focuses on those that are critically unwell. Again I am sorry that this was not fully explained.

I would like to look into your delay and review your assessment and would appreciate if you could contact patient affairs on 01355 585325 or PatientAffairs.Hairmyres@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk

Thank you

Kind regards

Lise
