"The treatment I received following my fall"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Accident and emergency North Devon District Hospital / Radiology (X-ray) North Devon District Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust / Emergency ambulance

(as the patient),

I’ve been asked to share my feedback about North Devon district hospital.

In late December I had a fall and injured myself considerably, I went to the hospital by ambulance. They took me to A&E, they attended to me, made me comfortable, I was in there for a week. The A&E department, did me a scan and sent me to the ward and stitched up my head wound.

When I had the scan and xrays they explained why I was having them. I broke a bone in my right ankle, and they xrayed there and the scan covered my whole body and they discovered that I had broken a bone in my neck, either in the A and E dept or on the ward, I can’t remember, they plastered me up, and gave me a stiff collar for my neck and they stitched my scalp up. I was unconscious for 10/15 mins after my fall because I hit my head against the wall.

It was good on the ward. They couldn’t have done any better.

In A&E the nurse saw me straight away, I can’t remember how long I had to wait for the doctor.

I’m happy with the service I received from the major trauma service, I’m perfectly happy with the way they dealt with me and the treatment that I had both in the trauma unit and on the ward.

I waited approx. 4 hours for the ambulance and they arrived just as the district nurse came to my house, I should add that my wife had a sleeping carer and she rang the ambulance service and the district nurse arrived a few minutes before the ambulance and helped me up and the ambulance said they would take me to hospital. They couldn’t do anything for me, the district nurse dressed my head wound and the paramedics said that’s okay and they gave me some pain killers on the way to hospital, they took me into the A&E straight away, they were very good. I have no complaints at all, the service was particularly good apart from I had to wait four hours for the ambulance but it was a busy time and many people had to wait longer than that to receive the ambulance so I consider myself lucky in that respect.

Dear Capricornuske47

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback following your recent visit to the North Devon District Hospital.

I was sorry to hear of your fall in December and hope that you have fully recovered.

Speaking on behalf of the Radiology team I am most pleased to hear that the process of having an x-ray was explained in detail to you and that you felt informed and comfortable during the procedure. The x-ray then enabled our colleagues in A&E and the ward to respond to your needs and look after you.

It's always lovely to hear of positive experiences from our patients and I will ensure that I pass your comments on to the Radiographers around in the A&E department.

Thank you once again for leaving feedback for the Radiology team and I wish both you and your wife all the best.
