"Many things were poor and need to be improved."

About: Dorset County Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I was admitted on Saturday for a hysterectomy in Dorset County Hospital.

While all the staff I met were helpful and friendly, there were many things that were very poor and need to be improved.

I was admitted at 07:30, and waited over 6 hours to go into surgery, I had the pre-op meds at about 09:00, but didn't go down to surgery until after 1:00 pm.

Once admitted to the ward, I was not offered anything to eat or drink, or told how the surgery went,

I was in a great deal of pain, yet wasn't checked on by any nurses, my sister arrived and asked for some pain meds for me, and I had to wait over an hour for someone to come and help.

I was in hospital for 3 days, and on several occasions had to wait hours for pain meds, as the nurses were very sparse or I had asked and it took a long time for somebody to come.

The morning after my surgery I was in a lot of pain, and really needed a wee. I thought this was strange as I had a catheter in.  I finally called a nurse, nobody had checked on my catheter bag since my surgery the day before, and it was full to the brim which explained my pain and needing to go for a wee. This can't be good for you?

The food was very poor when I was finally offered some. One meal was a jacket and cauliflower; it was very random and I could not eat it.

On the second night I went to the toilet about 21:20 as I was going to go to bed.  When I got back to my bed a nurse was standing there and told me I was being moved as they needed the bed so had to pack my things up.

Three of us had to move very late at night down to the day surgery unit in make-shift beds, the last woman didn't arrive until midnight.

The staff were very nice there but it was very cold, and all seemed a bit disjointed to move people so late at night.

And the next morning all the staff and patients arrived for the day surgeries yet having 4 patients from wards there really messed things up.

I appreciate the NHS in very stretched, and the doctors and nurses do their best, but I left the hospital very disappointed in my treatment,

I  shouldn't have to pay to go private in the event of needing medical help and getting the care you hope for.

I really hope things can improve for the next patient who has to go into hospital, it is a stressful time anyway and not a place anybody wants to go, especially when my experience in there was so poor.
