"The whole experience was upsetting and disappointing"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Maternity unit

(as a service user),

I attended for my 12 week scan and left so disappointed and upset. Met by the sonographer who was rude and abrupt. Barely introduced themselves and it felt like they had better things to do.

They didn't explain anything that we could see on the screen and had to be prompted to explain by us asking continuous questions.

The baby was in a difficult position to measure and comments were made about how the sonographer was done with our baby and fed up with our baby which we felt was inappropriate.

We were delighted to see our baby was growing and healthy and I know the main aim is to make sure the baby is doing ok, but we also were excited to receive our ultrasound picture to show all our family and share our news.

There was multiple opportunities to take a clear picture, instead we left with picture that looked unlike anything I'd seen before and not able to even say it was a baby ultrasound.

The whole experience was upsetting and disappointing and I felt no care was given about us, the baby and the experience we were receiving.

Dear BS2020

Thank you for sharing this feedback and I am sorry to read that this has been your experience..

Our aim during the ultrasound appointment is to gather clinical facts but also to offer reassurance and information to you as part of an important point in your pregnancy journey. I can only apologise that you left your appointment feeling disappointed.

It can be difficult to capture a clear picture on ultrasound, however we recognise the importance of this for parents and their families, and please be assured that I will discuss your experience with the lead for maternity ultrasound services.

As this is an anonymous platform we are unable to speak with specific staff unless you wish to contact me directly to provide more information.

I wish you well in your pregnancy and hope that your future appointments provide reassurance for you.
