"Son refused pain relief at A&E"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

My son attended A&E with his dad he was triaged and needed stitches.  He waited 4 hours and during this time became really sore. My husband asked for painkillers for him and was told by a member of staff that he couldn't have any as he had been triaged so now just had to wait to be seen.  They then just put their head down and ignored my husband.

It was another 2 hours before my son was seen and stitched. Approx 6 hours all in waiting to be seen and stitched and refused painkillers ! He’s a young teenager, was in pain and was made to feel like he didn’t matter. Someone behind a desk appeared too interested in process instead of the patient .

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us via Care Opinion. I was very sorry to learn of your poor experience. Please be assured that this is not the person-centred care that we aim for.

I am the Clinical Nurse Manager who manages the nursing staff who work within the emergency department. I have passed your feedback to nursing and administration team who work behind the reception desk so that they might refect upon your son's story and learn from it.

If you would like me to look into more detail of the specifics of this case, you can contact the patient experience team and leave your contact details on 01292 513942 (voicemail) and I will call you back or via email at aa.patientexperienceteam@aapct.scot.nhs.uk

Please pass on our best wishes to your son, who I hope is recovering well.
