"Feeling like I don't matter"

About: General practices in Ayrshire & Arran

(as a service user),

I spoke with my GP about a possible adult adhd assessment for myself. I took the adult adhd screen test on WHO as recommended by the NHS and scored very high. I have struggled for years with symptoms but as I’m more the inattentive side which has only become more known in recent years, I assumed I was just lazy and depressed.

I was told by GP that Ayrshire and Arran aren’t doing adult adhd assessments, and recommended I either go private or wait and ask in 6 months in case it changes. I feel I don’t matter.

I have had around 40 years of no support or treatment and I feel like I’m written off. I don’t know whether I have this condition or not, I’m not a professional, but it clicks so much and if there’s a chance I could still get some kind of life with some support and treatment then surely that should be enough to be assessed! Why can’t I be referred to another NHS board for assessment? Why am I told I can go private but even if I get the diagnosis the GP is unlikely to support it and prescribe any prescriptions?

My only option appears to be to just give up, accept that my life is what it is and that it will never get better. I’m a full time carer so I will never have funds for a private assessment let alone prescription costs that will never be took on by the NHS. The NHS won’t assess me, I can’t afford private, so I’m just left. Thanks for confirming I clearly don’t matter.

Dear Kg83

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience trying to access assessment support via your GP. I am so sorry to hear of the struggles you have faced for such a long time and I understand how frustrating and disappointing it would have been to hear this from your GP.

To allow the service to look into this further, I would ask if you could please email HSCPAdmin@east-ayrshire.gov.uk providing your personal details along with the name of your GP Practice which will allow the appropriate service area to look into this and give you a more detailed response and any options available to you.

Again, I am so sorry for your experience and sincerely hope some form of resolution can be found for you going forward.

Best wishes

Marie
