"Horrendous experience of cancer surgery"

About: The James Cook University Hospital / Breast surgery

(as a service user),

From entering this hospital in the early hours of the morning it felt like a factory type production line.   It resembled being in a airport but you were simply a piece of luggage.

You had to stand beside your hand luggage if you were staying over night.

The paperwork was completed by staff who marked you up like a piece of meat.  It felt like this is what you were to them.

Then you are naked in your dressing gown and marched into surgery.

A staff member involved with the surgery asked if they could use my cells or cut off bits for experimentation or research - who knows? I said yes as it wasn't private and I felt under pressure.

I then awoke on a hospital bed surrounded by other women. Two had had a hysterectomy, there was constant vomiting in the night.  There were only two nurses, one reading a book and the other one who came when the buzzer was pressed.

I found it a  horrendous experience which I will never erase from my mind. Not the place for major surgery in my view.  They want you out the next day asap. It may be ok for small type surgery but not for cancer operations.

I found it disgusting and impersonal -  no care, just a  carrier bag of bandages and dressings and leaflets. Horrendous.

Dear Amazon warrior,

I am sincerely sorry to read about your poor experience whilst having your surgery with us, and at such difficult time for you. Please be assured your experience will be shared with the senior nursing team to review.

I would invite you to contact the patient experience department, so we can put you in touch with the senior nursing staff, who would be happy to discuss your experience further to identify improvements to their services.

Should you wish to do so please contact the Patient Experience Department by telephone: 01642 854807 Email: stees.patient.experience@nhs.net

This PALS / Patient Service is a non starter, no-one responds by letter or phone.

You get a letter months later and no change takes place

Only phoned me once, I believe because CQC were inspecting them.

The person who rang me was agency staff and my complaint was too long for them. I believe they were there to tick a ☑️ box that I was happy. As I wasn't they said to email it again with the managers name in title box, again nothing.
