My elderly father with advanced dementia was admitted to Ward D in the Mater Hospital in Belfast in June as he had developed severe anaemia following a partial hip replacement carried out at the Royal Hospital, Belfast. The ward has gone into a Covid lockdown and only one visitor per day is permitted.
Trying to get an update on my father's condition has proved impossible. Nobody answers the phone and voicemails go unanswered. We have no other means of contact as he does not have a mobile phone due to the dementia. The whole situation is very distressing for my father and the family. This is just the latest in a series of failures in my father's 'care' since his diagnosis of dementia in 2020. I appreciate staff are very busy, but the issue of lack of communication with concerned relatives needs to be addressed.
